§ From Joseph Wheaton

1 March 1810, Washington. Seeks appointment as storekeeper of the Washington Navy Yard.

RC (DNA: RG 59, LAR, 1809–17, filed under “Wheaton”). 1 p. Wheaton had been sergeant at arms of the House of Representatives from 1789 to 1809, when he lost his position to Thomas Dunn of Maryland. He was to correspond frequently with JM between 1811 and 1824, and in October 1814 JM nominated him for the post of deputy quartermaster general in the U.S. Army. The Senate rejected the nomination on 30 Jan. 1815 (Senate Exec. Proceedings description begins Journal of the Executive Proceedings of the Senate of the United States of America (3 vols.; Washington, 1828). description ends , 2:543, 604, 606).
