From George Washington to Edmund Jennings Lee, 3 September 1798

To Edmund Jennings Lee

Monday Sept. 3d [17]98.

General Washington presents his compliments to Mr Edmund Lee, and requests the pleasure of his company to dine today with Genl Marshall and Mr Bd Washington.1

Typescript, ViMtvL.

1Apparently Edmund Jennings Lee did not accept GW’s invitation. GW wrote in his diary on 3 Sept.: “In the Morning to breakfast came Genl. [John] Marshall & Mr. Bushrod Washington and to dinner the Atty. Genl. Chas. Lee Mr. [William] Herbert Mr. [James] Keith & Doc. [James] Craik” (Diaries description begins Donald Jackson and Dorothy Twohig, eds. The Diaries of George Washington. 6 vols. Charlottesville, Va., 1976–79. description ends , 6:314).
