From George Washington to John Adams, 14 June 1790

To John Adams

Monday June 14. 1790

The President of the United States and Mrs Washington request the pleasure of the Vice-Presidents and Mrs Adams’s company to dinner on Thursday next at four o’clock, an answer is desired.1

L, MHi: Adams Family Papers.

1No reply to this invitation has been found, nor is there a record of the dinner in GW’s diary, since he did not resume making entries until 24 June. Social relations between the Washingtons and the Adamses at this time were extremely cordial. Abigail Adams wrote to her sister on 13 June that “I last week accompanied Mrs. Washington to the Jersies to visit the falls of Pasaick. We were absent three days and had a very agreeable Tour” (Abigail Adams to Mary Cranch, 13 June 1790, Mitchell, New Letters of Abigail Adams, description begins Stewart Mitchell, ed. New Letters of Abigail Adams, 1788–1801. Boston, 1947. description ends 51–52).
