⅌ John Hough

3On 26 April 1763 GW wrote in his account with Bryan Fairfax, “By 275 Acres of Land on Difficult @£30 pr Ct—[£] 82.10” (General Ledger A description begins General Ledger A, 1750–1772. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , folio 49). GW took this land in payment for money owed him by Fairfax. The tract, later resurveyed and found to contain about three hundred acres, was in Loudoun County at the bridge over Difficult Run. It served as a convenient station for GW’s wagons traveling to and from his quarters in Frederick County. See deeds of lease and release, 10, 12 April 1763, Loudoun County Deed Book C (1761–63), 458–63 (ViLeeLCh).
