After Lund Washington became his farm manager at Mount Vernon, GW regularly provided him with cash “to be acc[ounte]d for” (General Ledger A description begins General Ledger A, 1750–1772. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , folio 190).

William Gardner secured a license on 15 April 1765 to operate an ordinary in Fairfax County.

The £13 in Virginia currency was “to purchase Sundries for me at Philadelphi⟨a⟩” (General Ledger A description begins General Ledger A, 1750–1772. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , folio 202).

John Dalton (d. 1777) was one of the first merchants in Alexandria. For GW’s election to the House of Burgesses in Alexandria in 1765, see Fairfax County Poll Sheet, 16 July 1765.

This may be John Carlyle’s young cousin William of Limekilns in Scotland. In 1768 the Virginia Gazette (Purdie and Dixon; Williamsburg) listed a letter of 7 July 1768 to “William Carlyle, to the care of Col. John Carlyle” among letters at Dumfries post office.

In his account with his brother, GW indicates that the £10 was for “the hire of your Negro James—1 Year” (General Ledger A description begins General Ledger A, 1750–1772. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , folio 7).
