5. This may be John Carlyle’s young cousin William of Limekilns in Scotland. In 1768 the Virginia Gazette (Purdie and Dixon; Williamsburg) listed a letter of 7 July 1768 to “William Carlyle, to the care of Col. John Carlyle” among letters at Dumfries post office.
