From George Washington to the United States Senate and House of Representatives, 18 February 1793

To the United States Senate and House of Representatives

Gentlemen of the Senate and of the House of Representatives.

I now lay before you a Report, and Plat of the Territory of the United States, on the Potomac, as given in by the Commissioners of that Territory, together with a letter from the Secretary of State which accompanied them.1 These papers being original, are to be again deposited with the Records of the Department of State, after having answered the purpose of your information.

1Thomas Jefferson enclosed the draft of this message, a plat of the boundary of the federal district, a report from the D.C. commissioners of 1 Jan., and his letter to Congress of 18 Feb. in his letter to GW of 18 February. Both houses of Congress recorded this message on 18 Feb., although the Senate did not receive the plat until the next day, since the only copy had been sent first to the House (Annals of Congress description begins Joseph Gales, Sr., comp.
