To Samuel Powel and the Members of the Pennsylvania Senate

[Philadelphia] January 5th 1793

The President of the United States requests the pleasure of the company of the Speaker and members of the Senate of the State of Pennsylvania to dine with him on Saturday the 12th of January, at 4 O’clock.1

1Powel wrote the last names of the following Pennsylvania senators at the bottom of the manuscript page: Robert Brown, Lindsay Coats, James Dunlop, John Edie, John Andre Hanna, Gabriel Heister, John Hoge, Thomas Jenks, Thomas Kennedy, William Montgomery, Anthony Morris, Michael Schmyser, Alexander Scott, John Sellers, John Smilie, Abraham Smith, and Richard Thomas. Current senators whose names Powel did not note were John Gloninger and Richard Peters. At “One O’Clock” on this date, Powel replied to GW: “Your Letter, addressed to the Speaker and Senate of the State of Pennsylvania, being sent to my House, did not come to my Hands ‘till after the Adjourment of the Senate. I will not fail to communicate the Contents to them on Monday Afternoon, the Time to which the Senate is adjourned” (DLC:GW).
