AD, DLC:GW. This is written in GW’s hand almost certainly on 17 Sept. 1755 and probably emended on 18 Sept. On the reverse of the document appear the following notations: “Have the Arms all clean’d” and “Not to enlist Felons.”

GW inserted William Bronaugh’s name here. Bronaugh’s promotion was announced on 18 Sept.

GW originally listed Denis McCarty as captain no. 14 but struck his name. On 13 Jan. 1756 in a letter to Dinwiddie GW referred to McCarty as someone “who you once appointed a Captn.”

GW drew a line through “1st William Bronaugh” at the head of the lieutenant’s column and added “Jno. Lowry” at the bottom.

GW assigned new numbers to the ensigns in the left-hand column.

On 9 Jan. 1756 when he issued his company assignments in the Virginia Regiment, he listed the 16 captains in the same order of seniority as here (with Henry Harrison replacing his brother Carter Henry Harrison), substituted John Hall for “Merriweather” among the lieutenants, and omitted the names of ensigns De Keyser, Polson, and Stephen, none of whom remained in the regiment.
