1. GW presumably received “A Daily Return of the Nine american Companys Fort Cumberland Sepr 17th 1755” shortly after his arrival at the fort and before issuing his orders of that date, in which he listed the officers in the new Virginia Regiment. The “Daily Return” indicates that there remained at Fort Cumberland on 17 Sept., 2½ months after Braddock’s defeat, the remnants of the companies commanded by John Dagworthy of Maryland, Edward Brice Dobbs of North Carolina, and the Virginia captains Adam Stephen, Peter Hog, George Mercer, Thomas Waggener, William Polson, William La Péronie, and Thomas Cocke. Captains Stephen, Mercer, and Cocke were present at Cumberland on 17 Sept., but Captain Dagworthy had not yet arrived at the fort. Captains Hog, Waggener, and Dobbs were on leave, and Polson and Péronie were dead. Present also were 2 lieutenants from the Maryland company, 3 from the Carolina company, and 7 from the Virginia companies; 1 adjutant, 1 quartermaster, and 1 surgeon; 3 sergeants and 1 drummer in each company; and 137 men fit for service, 37 sick and wounded, and 9 on detached service. The return was signed by William Stark.
