From George Washington to Brigadier General William Woodford, 22 October 1779

To Brigadier General William Woodford

Head Quarters West point 22d October 1779

Dear Sir

I recd yours of yesterday inclosing the approbation of the Executive of Virginia to the promotion of sundry Serjeants in your own & Genl Muhlenbergs Brigades1—Before Commissions can be obtained, you must designate the Regiments to which they are to be appointed and their relative Ranks—I imagine their Commissions are to bear date from the time they were approved by the Council. I return you the lists that you may make the necessary amendments.2 I am Dear Sir Yrs &c.

Df, in Tench Tilghman’s writing, DLC:GW; Varick transcript, DLC:GW.

1Woodford’s letter to GW of 21 Oct. has not been found, and its enclosure has not been identified. For considerations related to the promotion of these sergeants, see GW to Woodford, 31 August.

2Woodford apparently completed these amendments in time for GW to request commissions in his letter to the Board of War of 19 November.
