To Major General Israel Putnam

West Point July 19th 1779

Dr Sir

Inclosed I send you a copy of a General order for the disposition of the army1—The particular one of the Right Wing is to be as follows Woodfords Brigade to take post at or near Junes—Mughlenberghs at the forrest of Deane The other two divisions to preserve their present encampments2—You will send orders for this purpose to the two Virginia Brigades without delay that they may be at their intended posts as quick as possible.3 I am &.

2These were the Maryland and Pennsylvania divisions, also placed under Putnam’s command.

3GW is referring to the brigades of brigadier generals William Woodford and Peter Muhlenberg. For Putnam’s failed attempt to communicate rapidly with these two officers, see his letter to GW of 21 July.
