To Robert Morris

Pluckamin [N.J.] Jany 5th 1777

Dear Sir,

The Inclosed coming to you open, leaves nothing for me to add on the score of Information of our Circumstances & Situation1—A Report (and such only I give it) is just brot that the Enemy are evacuating Brunswick, and moving forward towards Amboy or Woodbridge.2

Your sending the Inclosed for Mrs Washington3 to the Post Office (if in time for the Southern Mail) will much oblige Dr Sir, Yr Most Obedt Servt

ALS, DNA:PCC, item 152. GW addressed the cover: “To The Honble Robt Morris Esqr. Philadelphia,” and he signed his signature in the lower left corner of the cover.

2Archibald Robertson, who was with the British army at New Brunswick, says in his diary that on this date “the 4th Brigade went to Amboy and orders [were] sent to the Different Cantonments on our Right to collect at Elizabeth Town, the 42d at Piscatouay [Piscataway]” (Lydenberg, Robertson’s Diaries description begins Harry Miller Lydenberg, ed. Archibald Robertson, Lieutenant-General Royal Engineers: His Diaries and Sketches in America, 1762–1780. New York, 1930. description ends , 121). A strong British and Hessian force remained at New Brunswick during the winter and spring of 1777.
