From George Washington to Major General Johann Kalb, 24 April 1778

To Major General Johann Kalb

Head Quarters Valley Forge 24th Apl 1778

Sir

As a Council is to be held at this place upon the arrival of Major Genl Gates, I desire you to repair immediately to Camp, that you may be ready for that purpose. I am &c.

Df, in Tench Tilghman’s writing, DLC:GW; Df, DLC:GW; two Varick transcripts, DLC:GW. The second draft, in Robert Hanson Harrison’s writing, reads: “It is essential that there should be an immediate meeting of General Officers to consult and advise upon some measures of great importance; I am therefore to request your speediest return to Camp that you may make a part of the Board” (DLC:GW). Kalb had stopped at Lancaster on his return to camp from Albany.

GW also wrote on this date to Maj. Gen. John Armstrong, who was at Carlisle, Pa.: “A council will be held here as speedily as possible to settle a plan of operations for the ensuing campaign, which I should be glad, you could make it convenient to attend. . . . As it is a business of great importance and requires dispatch, if it will suit you to be present, you will be pleased to repair immediately to Head Quarters” (Df, DLC:GW). Both Kalb and Armstrong attended the council, held on 8 May.
