Mount Vernon 30th Augt 1799
Dear Sir,
Although I have more than a sufficient deposit in the Bank of Alexandria to take up my note;1 yet, as I know also that there will be calls upon me that may not be conveniently answered without that aid; I have thought it advisable (as the 60 days has, or is about to expire) to renew it: and will thank you for taking the necessary steps to effect it accordingly.2 With very great esteem and regard—I am Dear Sir Your Most Obedt & Affecte Servant

Herbert replied later this day: “From what passed between us, when I was Last at Mount Vernon, I Concluded, that you did not Mean to renew your Note in Bank, Consequently did Not Send you a Note to Sign for that purpose, however It is not now too late, & you have one Inclosed, which You will please to return to me to Morrow, as it must make a part of this Weeks discount & of Course, dated on Monday last” (DLC:GW).
