Dear Sir,
The only unsettled matter in my administration of the estate of Colo. Thos Colvill, is a bond of one Sidney George, of Maryland.1 A Mr Chalme⟨rs⟩2 (now of London) who was directed to institute a suit in chancery in this case, & who has been written to on the subject, thinks, as he was in the habit of corrisponding with Colo. Carlyle about that time (1774) there may be found some letter of his, or account relative to the payment of £100 to Mr Jno. West in part of this Bond.3
You would oblige me very much by examining, & giving me information on this head as soon it is convenient to you, as I am now about to decide something with Mr George respecting this bond. With great esteem & reg[ar]d I am, Dr Sir Yr Obedt Hble Servt

On the entangled estates of brothers John and Thomas Colvill, see Thomas Montgomerie to GW, 24 Oct. 1788, source note. Alexandria, Va., merchant William Herbert had been hired in 1793 to review the financial accounts for the Colvill estate (James Keith to Tobias Lear, 15 July 1793, and notes 2 and 5).

3. The information received from George Chalmers was contained in his letters to William Tilghman of 5 Nov. and 4 Dec. 1793 (see n.2 of Tilghman to GW, 1 March 1794). Herbert was married to Sarah Carlyle, the daughter of Alexandria merchant John Carlyle, who died in 1780.
