Dr Sir.
I learn with concern that the statements from the War department referred to in my speech to Congress,1 are not yet handed in, & that some Members are ascribing delay of business to the want of information which has been promised, & which they have been expecting. I request that they may be presented without delay.2 I am always yrs &c.

1. GW is referring to his annual message to Congress of 8 December.
2. Pickering replied on the same date: “I am very unhappy myself, and more for the concern it gives you, that the statements expected from this department have been so long delayed. Some are copying, and the rest are preparing. It has required more time than I had imagined. I will devote all my attention to complete them” (ALS, DLC:GW; LB, DLC:GW).
