1The meeting of the directors of the Potowmack Company was not held, and GW remained at Mount Vernon. But see GW to George Gilpin, 29 May. On Saturday, 10 May, the treasurer of the company, William Hartshorne of Alexandria, “came in before Dinner to get notices (to the Subscribers to the Potomack Co. that motions would be made for judgments upon their Arrearages at the next Genl. Court) signed” (Diaries description begins Donald Jackson and Dorothy Twohig, eds. The Diaries of George Washington. 6 vols. Charlottesville, Va., 1976–79. description ends , 5:319–20). These suits were to be instituted under the terms of the acts of the Virginia and Maryland legislatures recently passed at the behest of the Potowmack Company (see GW to George Mason and David Stuart, 4 Nov. 1787, and note 1 of that document). For the meeting which took place on 1–2 June, see GW to George Gilpin, 29 May 1788, notes 1 and 3.
