Mount Vernon 20th Augt 1785
Dear Sir,
If nothing unforeseen happens, I can be at the Great Falls at any hour you & Colo. Fitzgerald will name, on Thursday next; ready to proceed from thence to the little Falls, if a vessel should be in readiness at the former.1 I am Dr Sir Yr Most Obt Servt

1. Four days later, on Wednesday, 24 Aug., GW again wrote Gilpin: “On Saturday, I informed you, that I could be ready to attend at the Great Falls at any hour tomorrow (thursday) that you & Colo. Fitzgerald would name, but your being then from home, & having heard nothing from you since, I am at a loss how to govern myself.
“It was my intention then, and is so still, if the meeting is to take place, to go to Mr Fairfax’s to Night, so that being convenient, I can be at the Falls at any hour that shall be named to morrow (ALS, MHi: Mrs. Grenville Temple Winthrop autograph collection, Winthrop family papers). GW did not go to the falls and next met with Gilpin and John Fitzgerald in Alexandria on 9 September.
