Sir,
I received yours of the 3d instant, covering a size and necessary roll of your company; which, being incomplete, is not what I wanted. Whenever you get all your company under your own command, you are to have them completed with necessaries agreeably to orders; and then to transmit me an exact size and necessary roll of the whole; and afterwards you are each month to send me a return of your company, as usual, and a general return of its necessaries agreeably to the enclosed form.1
I wrote to you fully yesterday; when I desired you to send what spare Blankets you had, to this place, so soon as you arrived at Pattersons. I have sent you the articles of war; which you will return when you are done with them.

1. Joshua Lewis returned his corrected size roll in time for GW to send it to Dinwiddie with his letter of 17 September. In DLC:GW there are one size roll and three necessary rolls of Lewis’s company without dates but prepared August-October 1757 (see GW’s Instructions to Company Captains, 29 July 1757, n.2). The size roll lists eighty-seven men, most of them between 20 and 30 with only four younger, but ten were 40 or older. Nearly all of the men recruited before 1756 are identified as of foreign birth. Those joining in 1756 were nearly all draftees and were identified as Virginians and as “planters.”
