From George Washington to William Herbert, 8 October 1798

To William Herbert

Mount Vernon 8th Oct. 1798

Dear Sir

I thank you for the information contained in your letter of the 5th instant & will avail myself of your kind offer, if circumstances shd render it expedient for me to have recourse to the Bank of Alexandria. Either of the sums mentioned therein, is more than I shall want; and if I could receive what I ought to do, I shall have no occasion for any from that source.1

I will inform young Mr Belknap of your obliging offer—and with very great esteem & regard I am—Dear Sir Yr obedt Hble Servt

Go: Washington

ALS (letterpress copy), DLC:GW; LB, DLC:GW.

1GW asked Herbert on 4 Oct. about the terms of a loan from Herbert’s bank in the expectation that he would at some point require a loan to complete the construction of the two houses that he intended to build in Washington. As it happened, GW did not have to resort to borrowing money from the bank in Alexandria until June 1799 (see GW to Herbert, 25 June 1799).
