Sir
Capt. Kellog applies for Leave to take the Command of Capt. Hubbard’s Compy who is now in Canada. Capt. Kellog has behaved like a good Officer the past Campaign & is desirous of the above Favor only upon this Account: he imagines he can be very serviceable in gitting the Compy fill’d up; & is willing to resign the Command to Capt. Hubard when he returns from the Northward; if he desires to take it The Subaltern Officers are consenting to it—I doubt not your Excellency will order that which is for the best.1 I am Your Excellency’s most obedient Servant

1. Robert Hanson Harrison replied to Ward later this day that GW was willing for Kellogg to “take the command of Captain Hubbards Company upon the terms proposed in your Letter, If you think him qualified & deserving of It—You will be pleased to mention the terms to him, that there may be no misunderstanding of the matter when Captain Hubbard returns” (MHi: Ward Papers). Jonas Hubbard, a captain in Artemas Ward’s Massachusetts regiment during 1775, died on 1 Jan. 1776 of a wound received the previous night in the attack on Quebec. Moses Kellogg had been a first lieutenant in Artemas Ward’s old regiment, the remnants of which were consolidated with parts of John Fellows’s and Theophilus Cotton’s Massachusetts regiments on 1 Jan. 1776 to form the 21st Continental Regiment commanded by Col. Jonathan Ward.
