Sir

I have the Honor to enclose You a Resolution of the Legislature of the State of Newyork, together with a Copy of their respectful Address.1

This communication would have been made sooner, but for the Indisposition of the President of the Senate, Who is prevented coming to Town to attend to this Business, which makes it my duty, as Speaker of the Assembly, to request You will be pleased to inform Me, what time will be most agreeable to You, to receive the original Address.2 I have the Honor to be with the greatest Veneration, Esteem, and Respect—Your most Obedient Hume Sert

1The resolution of the New York assembly of 7 July 1789 ordered that “a joint committee be appointed to prepare an address of the Legislature of this State, to the President of the United States of America, congratulating him upon his appointment to his present dignified station” (Journal of the Assembly of the State of New-York, at Their First Meeting of the Thirteenth Session description begins Journal of the Assembly of the State of New-York, At the First Meeting of their Thirteenth Session, begun and holden at the City of Albany, the Sixth Day of July, 1789. 2Verplanck and Pierre Van Cortlandt, president of the New York senate, had been directed by the legislature to deliver the address to GW (ibid., 20). Tobias Lear replied for GW to Verplanck on the same day, informing him that the president “will be ready to receive the Original Address tomorrow at 12 0clock” (DLC:GW).
