Albany, 4 June 1776. “I send down the Bearer Capt. Godwin of the Royal Artillery made Prisoner at Chambly:1 He has a Permit on Parole to join the Prisoners of that Garrison now in Trenton or some Other Part of New Jersey & is directed to wait on2 your Excellency for Directions in his Rout to New Jersey.”

1. Capt. William Godwin of the 4th Battalion of the Royal Regiment of Artillery received permission from Schuyler after his capture at Chambly the previous October to stay at Ticonderoga until he could make suitable arrangements for his wife and children at Quebec (Schuyler to Hancock, 25–26 Jan. 1776, DNA:PCC, item 153). From New York, Godwin went to Lancaster County, Pa., and then to Frederick, Md. (Lancaster County committee of safety to Richard Peters, 23 July 1776, DNA:PCC, item 69).
