MS (DLC); in an unidentified hand. Docketed in another hand: “Copy Inventory of Articles at Palace.”

An inventory of the furniture in the governor’s palace was made early in 1776 (Va. Council Jour. description begins Journals of the Council of the State of Virginia, ed. H. R. McIlwaine description ends , ii, 425), and at various times during Gov. Henry’s administration additional articles of furniture were purchased for the palace by the State (Va. Council Jour., i, 121, 142, 218, 280). The present inventory was evidently made after Patrick Henry had vacated the palace and was then turned over to TJ, who carefully checked it. On the leaf bearing the endorsement, there is the following notation in TJ’s hand: “things omitted. 2. delft wash basons. 4. blankets.” See also correction by TJ, footnote 1, below. There exists also (DLC: TJ Papers, 3: 492) a copy of a receipt signed by Patrick Henry, 29 May 1779, for a list of articles purchased for the Palace, which probably accompanied the inventory.

1The words from “wanting” are interlined in TJ’s hand.
