United States [Philadelphia] the 29th of Novr 1792.

Sir,

In obedience to the Order of the House of Representatives, I do myself the honor to transmit to you, their Resolution of this date, on the subject of an assay of foreign Coins.1 With the most perfect consideration, I am Sir, Your most obedient, and very humble Servant

1The House of Representatives resolved on 29 Nov. “That the President of the United States be requested to cause assays and other proper experiments to be made, at the Mint of the United States, of the gold and silver coins of France, England, Spain, and Portugal; and a report of the quantity of fine metal, and of alloy, in each of the denominations of the coins, to be laid before this House” (Annals of Congress description begins Joseph Gales, Sr., comp. The Debates and Proceedings in the Congress of the United States; with an Appendix, Containing Important State Papers and Public Documents, and All the Laws of a Public Nature. 42 vols. Washington, D.C., 1834–56. description ends , 2d Cong., 2d sess., 732). GW referred the House resolution to Thomas Jefferson, under whose jurisdiction the Mint had been placed. Jefferson received the results of the assays of foreign coins from Mint Director David Rittenhouse on 7 Jan. 1793 and submitted the assay report to the House the following day after sending a copy to GW earlier that day (see Jefferson to GW, 8 Jan. 1793, and note 1).
