Sir,

In obedience to the order of the House of Representatives, I have the honor to enclose you their Resolution of this date.1 With the most perfect respect, I am sir, Your mot Obedt & very hble Servant.

LB, DLC:GW. This letter appears under the heading: “December the 27th. The following Letter, with the Resolution enclosed was this day recd by the President.”

1The letter-book copy of the enclosed resolution, signed by John Beckley, clerk of the House of Representatives, reads: “Resolved, that the President of the United States be requested to cause this House to be furnished with a particular Account of the several sums borrowed under his authority, by the United States; the terms on which each Loan has been obtained; the applications to which any of the monies have been made, agreeable to appropriations; and the balances, if any, which remain unapplied: In this Statement it is requested, that it may be specified, at what times interest commenced on the several sums obtained, and at what times it was stopped, by the several payments made” (DLC:GW).

In response to that resolution, Tobias Lear wrote Alexander Hamilton on 28 Dec. “that the President requests the Secretary to have a statement prepared, agreeably to the Resolution of the House of Representatives, of which a copy is enclosed, to be laid before the House as soon as it conveniently can be done” (DLC:GW). Hamilton submitted his report, dated 3 Jan. 1793, to the House on 4 Jan. (see Syrett, Hamilton Papers, description begins Harold C. Syrett et al., eds. The Papers of Alexander Hamilton. 27 vols.
