2. George Tucker (1775–1861) was born in Bermuda and immigrated to the United States in 1787. He was brought up by a relative, St. George Tucker, the professor of law at the College of William and Mary. At the time of this letter he was practicing law in Lynchburg, Virginia. Tucker served in the U.S. House of Representatives, 1819–25. In 1825 he became professor of moral philosophy at the University of Virginia, a post he filled until 1845, when he moved to Philadelphia. He was an indefatigable writer, publishing books and essays on political economy, novels, histories, and biographies, including one of Thomas Jefferson.
