Ebenezer Stevens (1751–1823) served with Rhode Island forces and in the Continental army during the Revolution, advancing in rank from lieutenant to lieutenant colonel. After the war he settled in New York where he opened a mercantile firm, served in the New York legislature, and was one of the founders of the Tammany Society. Stevens did not receive a federal appointment, although in 1794 he served as United States agent for erecting fortifications at New York (DNA: RG 217, Miscellaneous Treasury Accounts, 1790–1894, account no. 6749).
