Sir

The Seven pounds Cash I Receved from Richard Stephens on account of Mr John Ballendine I Repaid to Richard Stephens for I was to Repay the money if you Did not Like of it and Richard Stephens told me you choosd to Settel with Mr Ballendine your Self and upon that I paid the money Back to Richard Stephens all1 from Sir your humbel Sar.

Joseph Stephens was a Fairfax County landholder. He at one time was an undersheriff of the county and a tavern keeper. He seems to have been the brother of GW’s overseer Richard Stephens.
