On April 5, 1797, Hamilton wrote to Smith : “I have received … Your letter of the 2d April (97).” Letter not found. ] Smith was a Federalist member of the House of Representatives from South Carolina, a close friend of H, and one of the leading advocates in the House of the policies which H had introduced as Secretary of the Treasury.
