1. John Spear Smith had traveled to Russia in 1809 as private secretary to John Quincy Adams. He later moved to London where he became chargé d’affaires after William Pinkney returned to the U.S. in February 1811 (John S. Pancake, Samuel Smith and the Politics of Business, 1752–1839 [University, Ala., 1972], pp. 101–2).
