The Bearer is kind enough to take Charge of a Packet of Letters brot out by a Flag, all private. Not a Syllable new ’till just now, Some People say a Body of their Troops Horse & Foot march’d last Night. they do not say their Destination.1 The Flag deliver’d a Message for the Comy of Prisoners desiring in future all Bundles may be directed to the Persons for whom they are intended, & that all Money may be put up in a Bag. Robert Smith (died c.1800), who had been appointed first lieutenant of the 2d North Carolina Regiment on 1 Sept. 1775, was promoted to captain and transferred to the 4th North Carolina on 16 April 1776. He transferred a second time, on 9 Jan. 1777, to the 3d Continental Dragoons. Smith resigned from the army following the capture of most of his regiment at Tappan, N.Y., on 27 Sept. 1778 and retired to Edenton, North Carolina.
