To James Madison from Bernard Smith, 10 March 1814 (Abstract)

From Bernard Smith, 10 March 1814 (Abstract)

§ From Bernard Smith. 10 March 1814, New Brunswick. “I have the honor to forward you a paper containing an account of a Republican festival in this City on the 4th. inst. by which you’ll perceive that even at the head quarters of federalism, in this State, the Republicans remain firm in their attachment to their Country, and to the Constituted Authorities.”1

RC (DLC). 1 p.

1Smith probably enclosed a copy of the 10 Mar. 1814 New Brunswick Fredonian, which described a 4 Mar. 1814 celebration marking the “Anniversary of the triumph of Republicanism.” The “numerous and respectable assemblage of citizens” heard an oration, partook of an “elegant supper” over which Smith presided, and drank toasts supportive of JM’s administration.
