To John Adams from William Stephens Smith, 4 August 1787

Lisbon August 4th. 1787.

Dear Sir—

The advances which I was under the necessity of making preparitory to my Journey, & the most extraordinary expences necessarily attending a Journey thro’ Spain & Portugal, together with my expences at this Court, increased by a Severe indisposition, has rendered it necessary for me to draw on your Excellency for one hundred pounds strg. at 30 day’s Sight, you will please to place it to account of Salary & Disbursements in the service of Congress—it is possible that I shall be with you before its presentation—if not certainly before it becomes due—

With the greatest respect / I am Your Excellencys / most obed. Serv.
