Dear Sir

Your favor of the 8th Instant1 Came Safely to hand Wherein you Request that I will inform you of the Success I have Met with, in this County Culpeper, in Obtaining Subscriptions for the Central College. One of the papers I put in the hands of Coll. Armistead Long,2 Who lives in the lower part of the County. I have not heard from him Since the Receipt of your last letter. I am Concern’d to State, that, I have not been able to get one Dollar to the paper I hold. I will still Endeavor to Raise something & if I Succeed you shall hear from Me on the Subject. Accept the best Wishes of Yr friend &c

2Armistead Long (b. ca. 1763), a resident of Culpeper County, served for three years as a sergeant in the First Regiment of Light Dragoons during the Revolutionary War and was commissioned a lieutenant colonel in the Virginia militia in 1807 (Horace Edwin Hayden, Virginia Genealogies.… [1891; reprint, Baltimore, 1973], 131; Scheel, Culpeper, 139, 145–46, 302).

3Philip Slaughter (1758–1849) was a Revolutionary War veteran who rose to become captain in the Eleventh Continental Regiment and fought at the battles of Brandywine, Germantown, Monmouth, and Stony Point (Raleigh Travers Green, comp., Genealogical and Historical Notes on Culpeper County, Virginia … [2 vols. in one; 1900; reprint, Orange, Va., 1989], 1:46–48, 2:3–4).
