Saratoga [N.Y.] Octr 23d 1776

Dear Sir

Yesterday I received Mr Harrison’s Letter of the 18th Instant, respecting the Stockbridge Indians1—They have all left the Army in the Course of the last Week and are returned Home—I have not had a Line from General Gates since the 16th2—The British Army under the Command of General Carlton were at Crown point on Monday last,3 and I suppose will make an Attempt on Tyonderoga in a few Days, if they have not already—The Militia move up slowly and very reluctantly. Finding that Mr Avery the present Commissary, in this Department, as being a Stranger, was not likely to get a Supply of Flour, I have requested the Committee of Albany and others to make purchases,4 and have so arranged Matters that I hope the Enemy will not be able to interrupt the necessary Supplies for the Army, if the Militia will do their Duty. I am Dear Sir with great Esteem Your Excellency’s most obedient humble Servant

1. Robert Hanson Harrison wrote Schuyler on 18 Oct.: “It being Evident that the Enemy, who have landed the Main Body of their Army on Frogs & Pells Points, have digested a Plan of penetrating into the Country & forming a Line in our Rear, I have the Honor to inform You by His Excellency’s Command, Whose Attention has been called from hence this Morng by their Motions, That he apprehends the Stock bridge Indians might render material Service here, as Scouting Parties, if the Situation of Affairs in the Northern Army do not require their Continuance there” (NN: Schuyler Papers).

2. Schuyler apparently is referring to Gates’s letter to him of 15 Oct. concerning the loss of Arnold’s fleet on Lake Champlain (see Schuyler’s second letter to GW of 16 Oct., n.1, and Robert Hanson Harrison to Hancock, 20 Oct., and note 1).

3. Gen. Guy Carleton’s army and fleet were at Crown Point on Monday, 14 Oct. (see Benedict Arnold to Schuyler, 15 Oct., quoted in Schuyler’s second letter to GW of 16 Oct., n.1, and Carleton to George Germain, 14 Oct., in Davies, Documents of the American Revolution description begins K. 4. The Albany committee of correspondence acted on 18 and 20 Oct. to assist Deputy Commissary Elisha Avery in procuring flour (see Minutes of the Albany and Schenectady Committees description begins Minutes of the Albany Committee of Correspondence, 1775–1778. 2 vols. Albany, 1923–25. description ends , 1:580, 583).
