1. On 8 July 1812 the National Intelligencer reported that JM, along with his family and the heads of departments, had been escorted to the Capitol on 4 July to hear Rush’s address. Afterward, JM’s party returned to the president’s house, “where an unusually numerous assemblage of ladies and gentlemen, including a large portion of the members of Congress, soon collected to offer and to interchange their personal respects,” while militia performed maneuvers and a marching salute in front of the house.
