To James Madison from Richard Rush, 17 July 1812 (Abstract)

§ From Richard Rush

17 July 1812. Requests that JM “accept a copy of the discourse the delivery of which, on the 4th of July, he was so obliging as to witness.”1

RC (PHi). 1 p. Enclosure not found, but see n. 1.

1On 8 July 1812 the National Intelligencer reported that JM, along with his family and the heads of departments, had been escorted to the Capitol on 4 July to hear Rush’s address. Afterward, JM’s party returned to the president’s house, “where an unusually numerous assemblage of ladies and gentlemen, including a large portion of the members of Congress, soon collected to offer and to interchange their personal respects,” while militia performed maneuvers and a marching salute in front of the house. The newspaper published Rush’s address on 28 July, and it was also printed in pamphlet form (An Oration, Delivered in the Hall of the House of Representatives … Washington, July 4, 1812 [Washington, 1812; Shaw and Shoemaker description begins R. R. Shaw and R. H. Shoemaker, comps., American Bibliography: A Preliminary Checklist for 1801–1819 (22 vols.; New York, 1958–66). description ends 26671]).
