ALB, DLC:GW. GW ordered these goods on 15 Nov. 1762. The invoices of the goods that he ordered at the same time for John Parke Custis and Martha Parke Custis and those for his dower plantations on the York River, all dated 10 April 1763, are in DLC:GW.

The Nelly entered the South Potomac on 5 July 1763. In his letter to Cary of 27 Sept. 1763, GW acknowledged that the goods had been delivered to Mount Vernon.

Hessian was a coarse cloth made of hemp and jute.

James Shepley & Co. was on Mincing Lane, London.

Manby, a maker of tobacco pipes, had a business at Hermitage Bridge.

GW ordered one gross of long pipes and one cask of “Comm[o]n Sale” pipes in his invoice of 15 Nov. 1762.

John Shakespear’s ropemaking shop was at Stepney Causeway.

This is bright (“bream”) lamp black.

Tilleting was the stiff linen fabric used for lining collars.

GW ordered labels for claret, port, Madeira, and Lisbon wine bottles.

In 1754 William Tidmarsh was a woolen draper in Tooley Street, Southwark.

Symes & Paillet, hop merchants and oilmen, was at St. Margaret’s Hill.

Mustard was grown in the Durham area.

Edward Goldney was a stationer in Watling Street in 1761.

William Hallier, a tinplate worker, in 1770 had a shop at 18 Bread Street, Cheapside.

This is probably Master & Raby, ironmongers in Smithfield.

This may be John Harris of Lemon Street, Goodman’s Fields.

The shilling column is mutilated.

The gunpowder was sent ten days later in the Nautilus. See the invoice from Cary, 23 April 1763.

This refers to an invoice following this in GW’s book of invoices for goods sent directly to GW’s York River plantations.
