<Tournus in Burgundy, December 18, 1777, in French: I beg you to forward a letter to my son in New England. I have received two of his, and he is extremely uneasy at having heard nothing from me and my family. He is one of the engineers that the government selected to send to America. I am a mother who has lost her companion in joy and sorrow; the only pleasure left me is in my family. Allowing him to go grieved me, but he had a good offer.4>

4. She presumably uses “Boston,” as so many did, to mean America. Jacques Rivaud was in Du Coudray’s party: Lasseray, Les Français, I, 100–1; II, 391. By the time this letter was written he was returning home, if he had not already sailed; in August and November Congress paid him a total of almost $700: JCC, VIII, 606; IX, 877. On Sept. 25, 1778, he and 24 other officers of Du Coudray’s corps received from the commissioners 900 l.t. apiece: National Archives.
