1. Schuyler’s letter to Hancock of 7 Jan. 1777, located in DNA:PCC, item 153, was read by Congress on 20 Jan. and referred to the Board of War (JCC description begins Worthington Chauncey Ford et al., eds. Journals of the Continental Congress, 1774-1789. 34 vols. Washington, D.C., 1904–37. description ends , 7:49). The Board of War ordered extracts from the letter to be sent to GW, who responded to them in his letter to Hancock of 5 February. Nourse wrote the extracts beneath his letter, the first of which reads: “Altho Colonel Wayne hopes that the pennsilvanians, will not leave him before they are regularly reliev’d, I fear he will be mistaken, and so very destitute are we of Troops in this Quarter that if General Carlton makes an attempt he will not only succeed in taking Tyconderoga this Winter, but may, if he pleases in five weeks from the date of this Letter be at Albany.” The second extract reads: “I am this moment going to the Convention of this State to try if I can get more assistance from them. I wish to have the assistance of a General Officer or two—I am alone distracted with a variety of Affairs and no one to share part of the Burthen.”
