Phoebe P. Morris to Dolley Payne Madison, 24 June 1813 (Abstract)

§ Phoebe P. Morris to Dolley Payne Madison

24 June 1813. Writes “in sincere anxiety for the health of the President,” and asks for “at least a line to say whether the reports of his illness are not exaggerated.” Adds at the request of her father [Anthony Morris] that he has decided “to leave us all here except Brother that he may be at more liberty to avail himself of the first opportunity which shall present itself from any port.”1

RC (DLC: Dolley Madison Papers). 1 p. Dated “June 24”; year supplied on the basis of internal evidence.

1Anthony Morris sailed from New Haven on 31 July 1813 and by 15 Sept. had arrived in Lisbon. An epidemic in Cádiz prevented him from going to that city until late in the year (Morris to James Monroe, 31 July, 15 Sept., 26 Nov., and 17 Dec. 1813, DNA: RG 59, DD, Spain).
