To James Madison from Josiah Meigs, 25 February 1815
From Josiah Meigs
Treasury Department,
General Land office, 25th. Feby. 1815.
Sir,
The letters from the Land officers at Canton, which you did me the honor to refer to me, I duly received.1 I do not perceive any objection to a removal of the Land office from Canton to Wooster; on the contrary, I think such removal will be an accommodation to purchasers of Land in that district, and particularly as an act has passed this session, attaching to that district a tract of Land two miles wide, extending from the Western boundary of the Connecticut Reserve, to the foot of the Rapids of the Miami of Lake Erie.2 I have the honor to transmit, enclosed, a proclamation for your approbation and signature,3 and am, &ca.
Letterbook copy (DNA: RG 49, Division C, Misc. Letters Sent). Enclosure not found, but see n. 3.
1. Meigs evidently referred to letters to JM from Reasin Beall, 23 Jan. 1815, and John Sloane, 24 Jan. 1815, register and receiver, respectively, of the Ohio land office. Both men recommended moving the office from Canton to Wooster (DNA: RG 49, Division D, Letters Received from Registers and Receivers of U.S. Land Offices, Canton, Ohio).
2. For the act, see , 3:201.
3. The draft proclamation that Meigs enclosed was evidently that of 25 Feb. 1815, moving the land office from Canton to Wooster as authorized by a 25 Feb. 1811 act of Congress (DNA: RG 49, Division D, Record Copies of Proclamations). For the act, see , 2:649–50.
