To James Madison from Josiah Meigs, 8 August 1815 (Abstract)

From Josiah Meigs, 8 August 1815 (Abstract)

§ From Josiah Meigs. 8 August 1815, “General Land-Office Washington City.” “The inclosed was received this morning from Edward Tiffin Surveyor General, with a request that it might be transmitted to the President of the United States.”

RC (DLC); letterbook copy (DNA: RG 49, Division C, Misc. Letters Sent). RC 1 p.; docketed by JM. Meigs enclosed Tiffin’s 31 July 1815 letter to him, which enclosed a copy of Michigan territorial governor Lewis Cass to Tiffin, 21 July 1815. Cass reported that “the indian Chiefs interested in the lands sold at the Treaties of Brownstown and Detroit” were gathering at the latter place, and that he was confident they would cooperate with the surveying of the tracts. He advised Tiffin to “have Surveyors ready to attend” when the Indians were ready. Tiffin informed Meigs that the surveyors were accordingly prepared, and remarked: “After suffering much pain of mind from the embarrassments & interuptions I have met with from those deluded people; I now rejoice at the prospects of being able to carry the views of the Government into effect by getting the Military lands surveyed in a reasonable time” (DNA: RG 49, Letters Received from the Surveyor General of the Territory Northwest of the River Ohio).
