If my Services in any thing I am capable of, could be useful to you, at the Salary of One Hundred pounds a yea⟨r⟩ and Board at your expence, I would be happy to rendre them, and to endeavour to merit your approbation, I remain with the most profound respect, Sir, your Excellency’s Most Obedient And Hble Servant

The correspondent, presumably Bernard McMahon (c.1775–1816), apparently wanted to become farm manager at Mount Vernon (see GW to James Anderson, 18 Aug.). Born in Ireland, McMahon came to Philadelphia in 1796 and later established a seed and nursery business in that city. Thomas Jefferson prized McMahon’s book, The American Gardener’s Calendar; Adapted to the Climates and Seasons of the United States. … (Philadelphia, 1806).
