From James McHenry

War office 12 April 1796

Sir

I beg leave to lay before you a letter from Mr Seagrove which I received this morning,1 and one from Mr Price, the factor or agent for the trading house at Colerain with a draught of answers thereto.2 If you can spare time to look over them, I can receive your instructions at Any hour as the vessel is to sail to-day.3 I have the honour to be with the most perfect respect Sir Your most ob. & hble st

James McHenry

ALS, DLC:GW; LB, DLC:GW.

1The letter from Creek agent James Seagrove has not been identified.

2The letter from Edward Price has not been identified, but McHenry replied to Price on this date: “I have received your letter of the 24th of February ultimo. Your remarks on the mode that has been prescribed for carrying on the Indian trade with the public goods appear to me judicious and pertinent. The difficulties of Supplying them without intermediary white traders had occurred, but they were not deemed insurmountable. It was, at least, hoped that the Indians might be gradually induced to a freer intercourse and more intimate friendship, by becoming generally the Sellers of their own peltry, and buyers of the articles they wanted in return.

“As this Subject is important, you will be pleased to give to it further attention, and to communicate the result of your observations & reflexions. In the mean while, it may be expedient to give such small credits to the traders who may be recommended to you by Mr Seagrove, or those in whom you can confide, as may prevent present inconveniencies, ’til such time as a permanent arrangement can be taken in the premises.

“The Sloop William, which carries supplies for the troops, and Stores for the commissioners to hold the treaty with the creeks, is ordered to return as soon as you can ship the peltry and Skins you may have on hand” (DNA: RG 75, Letters to Factors).

3Philadelphia newspapers for 16 April reported the departure for St. Marys, Ga., of the William.
