RC (MHi); in the hand of a representative of Mathew Carey & Son; between dateline and salutation: “Thos Jefferson Esq”; endorsed by TJ as a letter from the elder Carey received 6 May 1818 and so recorded (with letter mistakenly dated 10 Apr. 1818) in SJL; with subjoined receipt to TJ in the same hand dated Philadelphia, 11 Apr. 1818, indicating that for $8 TJ had purchased from the firm one Bible, “Morocco, gilt.”

The small bible enclosed, thirty-twomo in size, has not been found, although TJ’s retirement library did contain a Bible described as “Eng. 16mo.” (Poor, Jefferson’s Library description begins Nathaniel P. Poor, Catalogue. President Jefferson’s Library, 1829 description ends , 9 [no. 498]).
