By last Mail, we took the liberty, which we hope you will excuse, of sending you a Volume of a very interesting work, which we have an idea of publishing, with such corrections & alterations as may be found necessary. The editorship is undertaken by a literary gentleman, whom we believe fully competent to do it justice.

Our wish is, if you should deem it right, to be favoured with a very brief recommendation of the work, which we shall regard as a very particular favour conferred upon

RC (MHi); in Mathew Carey’s hand; dateline at foot of text; at head of text: “Hon Thomas Jefferson, Esqr”; endorsed by TJ as a letter from Mathew Carey received 28 Sept. 1818 and so recorded in SJL.

The interesting work was the first volume of Edward Baines, History of the Wars of the French Revolution, from the breaking out of the war in 1792, to the restoration of a general peace in 1815; comprehending The Civil History of Great Britain and France, during that period, 2 vols. (London, 1817). TJ later acquired a four-volume octavo edition printed by Carey in Philadelphia in 1819, which contained additional notes and a history of the War of 1812 (Poor, Jefferson’s Library description begins Nathaniel P. Poor, Catalogue. President Jefferson’s Library, 1829 description ends , 4 [no. 89]; TJ’s copy in MWiW-C).
