To George Washington from Thomas Marshall, 19 May 1786

From Thomas Marshall

Fayette County 19th of May 1786

Dear Sir.

I have made inquiry concerning your entry which Mr Hite mentioned to you & can find nothing of it—I believe he must have been misstaken—I have seen him and ask’d him concerning it, but he can tell me nothing more about it than that he thought he had seen such a one.

Your warrant I have put into the hands of Mr John Obannon, formerly a Neighbor of mine, and now one of the Military Surveyors. He has promised to do his best for you & I think he may be depended on. I have made no particular bargain with him otherwise than assuring him that he shall be generously satisfyed for his trouble.1

I will this fall attend to the commission you honord me with respecting the Marquis La Fayette. & send on such of the articles as I can procure.2 I have the honor to be with the most respectful esteem Dear Sir your most obedient servant

T. Marshall

ALS, DLC:GW. The letter was delivered to GW at Mount Vernon on 24 July 1786 (Diaries description begins Donald Jackson and Dorothy Twohig, eds. The Diaries of George Washington. 6 vols. Charlottesville, Va., 1976–79. description ends , 5:15).

1GW gave to Marshall in May 1785 before Marshall’s departure for Kentucky John Rootes’s warrant for 3,000 acres assigned to GW in 1774. John O’Bannon (d. 1813), who went from Fauquier County to Kentucky in 1784, surveyed three tracts on the Little Miami for GW under the Rootes warrant and delivered them to GW in August 1788. See Marshall to GW, 12 May 1785, and notes, GW to Thomas Lewis, 1 Feb. 1784, n.5, and Diaries description begins Donald Jackson and Dorothy Twohig, eds. The Diaries of George Washington. 6 vols. Charlottesville, Va., 1976–79. description ends , 5:371–72. A survey of 977 acres on the Little Ohio by O’Bannon, dated 26 May–11 June 1788 is in OBatCCh.

2On 12 May 1785, shortly before he went out to the Kentucky region, Thomas Marshall wrote that he would be pleased to collect seeds of plants for GW as Lafayette had requested and that he would take out GW’s “warr[an]t as Assignee of Rootes.” On 27 Oct. 1787 he wrote GW about the seeds he had found and said that he was sending them to Mount Vernon by Rawleigh Colston.
