From James Madison to George Graham, 11 November 1823

To George Graham

Montpellier Novr. 11. 1823

Dear Sir

I have recd. your favor of the 4th.1 on the subject of the balance in your hands after paying the interest of the first instalment of my debt to the bank. It will be most convenient at present to give an order for it, viz. $214.47. to Cuddin Davis2 who will probably be in Washington very shortly. Excuse the trouble which my overremittance has occasioned you, and accept with my thanks my respects and good wishes.

James Madison

RC (PHi).

2This was probably Edwin Cudden Davis (1780–1854), a shopkeeper at Orange Court House, Virginia. In his retirement JM made extensive purchases through Davis, such as farm equipment, whiskey, and general merchandise, and on occasion Davis handled the sale of JM’s flour and other local financial transactions (DMDE description begins The Dolley Madison Digital Edition, ed. Holly C. Shulman (Charlottesville: University of Virginia Press, Rotunda, 2004), http://rotunda.upress.virginia.edu/dmde/default.xqy. description ends ; Cudden Davis Ledgerbook, 1818–1830s, courtesy of an anonymous collector).
