Meriwether lewis, outfitted with fresh horses and a carriage, met TJ’s daughters and two of his grandchildren, ten-year-old Thomas Jefferson Randolph and his six-year-old sister Ellen, at the home of John Strode, which was next to Herrin’s Tavern (herring’s), at the end of the second day of their journey. He accompanied them the 62 miles TJ estimated from there to the Georgetown ferry and into Washington (see Vol. 37:534–5; Martha Jefferson Randolph to TJ, 9 Nov.). On 16 Nov., TJ wrote an order on John Barnes “to furnish Capt. Lewis with 40. Dollars on acct. of Th:J. for the expences of the journey he is to take for his family” (MS in ViU: Mary Kirk Moyer deposit; in TJ’s hand; addressed: “Mr. Barnes”; endorsed by Barnes as paid on 16 Nov.; endorsed by TJ). TJ entered the 16 Nov. payment to Lewis in his financial records. On 21 Nov., TJ recorded that he “Recd. back from Capt. Lewis .50 of the money ante Nov. 16” (MB description begins James A. Stage line operator John H. Barney also submitted an invoice dated 21 Nov. for $50 for Lewis’s “use of my Carriage & 4 Horses & Driver 5 Days” (MS in ICHi; in Barney’s hand; with order by TJ at foot of text: “Mr. Barnes will be pleased to pay this Th: Jefferson Nov. 22. 1802”; signed by Barney acknowledging payment; endorsed by Barnes as paid in full on 22 Nov.).
